Planting Trees

Planting trees was one of the things I did as a young girl growing up. I didn’t really like it then, but now it is good. Knowing the benefits of trees is important to me now more than ever.

HOW IT STARTED

My dad always cleared land so he could have good meadow land for our cattle to eat. Then he would show up with a large amount of trees for us to plant! A nearby papermill would donate large amounts of pine trees to be planted. Dad would bring around 200 home maybe more. We would plant along fence rows and on rocky hills where nothing else would grow. It was great to prevent soil erosion. My mom planted trees all around the home, but usually we had to dig up a tree somewhere that someone would give us or find in the woods. My job was to water them 2 times a day. I’m talking about 20 trees. We were all about saving money. Times were hard. I look for ways to save now, I found SAVINGS Here with many things.

IT’S TIME FOR PLANTING TREES AGAIN

This is a BUR oak (Quercus macrocarpa) tree also known as blue oak, mossy overcup oak and scrub oak. It has the largest acorns of all native oaks and is very drought resistant! Ok enough with the science lesson. I just love the tree, I am fascinated by the size of the acorns. I don’t see them very often, but my Husband and I have rooted out some seeds to plant for big shade trees. See below:

We harvested the acorn in the fall. Took the cap off and soaked the seed in water 24 hours and then put in a plastic bag and stored it in the refrigerator until the early spring. Then we put the acorn pointed side down into the dirt about 4 inches deep. We used a good miracle grow mixture. We kept it watered and now we have trees to plant. We will plant them in late October or Early spring.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED:

As I have grown older, I still like to save money. I also see the value of planting trees. I need to replace the things you can. It didn’t really cost much except the dirt to plant the seeds. It is also so much fun to watch something grow from your own efforts. So Save those seeds and get to planting.
