My Greatest Watermelon Memories

When I think of watermelons my memories are of my dad. The picture I have here sums up how much he liked watermelons. He planted a huge patch each year for us and we sold a lot of them also. It was hard work carrying them out of the field. They were easy to sale because just about everyone in our small town were asking around town if anyone had watermelons for sale.

My dad was all about working and making money. One summer he planted watermelon and purple hull peas. I could pick the watermelons and sale them. They didn’t last too long. You could drive to a nearby town and have a pickup load sold by noon. Then come back the next day and sell more. We had many local town people stop by to purchase one everyday. My dad would have them in his pickup where ever he went and he usually made several sales.

What to do With the rind?

In all my watermelon memories all we ever did with the rind was throw it over the fence for the cows or horses to eat. They loved it and would have it gone in no time. Which was good or it would rot and start stinking.

I know some people pickle the rind, but we never did. The rind is supposed to really good for you to eat, but it was too green tasting for me. Some peple make watermelon wine, I have never tasted it but it is supposed to be good. If you like really good wine look into becoming a member of our great program and get members only exclusive rights to our private wine club here.

We have so many memories of watermelons and summer, but the most important part is working together and spending time with each other. Everyone is usually happy and laughing when eating watermelon. Family, friends and Laughter is what memories are all about.
